Audacity is a free recording tool - and a truly fine one at that. You would have to pay a lot of $$$ to top the features of Audacity.
Many folks use it as a quick recording tool, and maybe for ripping cassettes and CDs but there are a lot of fun things that you can do as well.
In honor of spring break, here is a fun thing you can do with Audacity: make your own ringtones.
Ringtones can be annoying because everyone has the same one, or they are just, well, annoying from the start. Why not annoy people because yours is more interesting than theirs?
Don't know much about audio recording? No worries - their documentation will take you right from the very beginning.
And for the "record" their manual is kept up to date, and clearly written as well.
