Too often they are limited in ability, poorly supported, or trials to entice you to buy a pricier item. I take my job seriously and if I need good tools, I want them to work properly. If I have to pay for them, then it is because I value them and their developers.

That said, I checked out the website for the proposed speaker for SIDLIT 2016. Richard Byrne's Free Technology for Teachers is a blog that hits the trifecta of being well-written, well-designed and up-to-date. The content targets a WIDE range of subjects and ages as well. As who is to say that an item targeted at high schools won't work for an incoming college freshman?

I also appreciate his style - a trendy, breezy one, but one that works well for online readers, using lots of short lists and chunked paragraphs. For a busy professional who wants to scan headings before digging deeper - good reading.

Put it on a feed of your choice (RSS, Pinterest, Google+ etc) or do the old-fashioned thing and bookmark the site. Regardless, this is a site that instructors from all disciplines can dip into to find that tool to make your life and those of your students a bit smoother.
They are well known vloggers who have a TON of videos out there. Most notable for higher education is the series Crash Course.
These are 5-7 minute videos on a wide range of subjects appropriate to many gen ed courses. Not that you can substitute any of these for more direct approaches but they make a humorous break, particularly for intimidating or otherwise dreaded subject matter. Subjects include: philosophy, US history, World History, government, economics, chemistry and anatomy and physiology.
This guys come across so completely laid back and knowledgeable, that they make for great fun even if you aren't taking notes for that next test. Reminds me of something that the Mental Floss folks might do.
RSS
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6688788144750011794.post-31054928924991763722016-02-15T15:29:00.000-06:002016-02-15T15:29:25.717-06:00Hear thisFree Sound Effects!
I was browsing some of my old Bookmarks and found this site that has free sound effects. The company appears to be a professional production company that has been around for a while.
There is quite a range of effects, categories, and formats. You are no longer stuck with whatever the tool you are using has to offer, or spending a lot of time surfing for the sound of a magic wand, or someone clearing their throat, or an inkjet printer, or falling coins...
RSS
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6688788144750011794.post-34412908723792768792016-02-10T08:00:00.000-06:002016-02-10T08:00:11.135-06:00Drive Instruction With Digital BadgesIs digital badging the future of digital learning?

Currently, I'm developing a professional development course titled, Gamify Your Canvas Course. This course walks faculty through the process of creating their own digital badges for their students. I'm doing this because I often find myself motivated by a simple token or digital badge. I think of this as the trophy room on the PS4 or Xbox. Most games are filled with rewards and digital tokens you can unlock.

The big questions will be, Will this gamification of courses catch on with online faculty? Do employers care if job applicants have digital badges? This article highlights that digital badging should start in professional development first. What are your thoughts?

I find it amazing to work in an environment that can change so many people. Education is a great field where one can truly have an impact.

"In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton described his laws of universal gravitation and motion in Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. While he was clearly contemplating something other than interactions between teachers and students, his Second Law (Law of Motion) posits that Force equals Mass times Acceleration (F = M x A).

With a generous bit of literary license, we can borrow from Sir Isaac and posit that in terms of student outcomes, Achievement equals Quality Instruction times Innovation (A = QI x I).

The impact of a good teacher is profound. It trumps just about every other variable influencing schooling. No one questions the significance of a skilled teacher who knows both their content and their kids well. Tracy Kidder, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, wrote in 1990 that “Good teachers put snags in the river of children passing by, and over the years they redirect hundreds of lives.” I think that he got it right."
"According to some education researchers, it may not matter. They say the idea of teaching according to students’ “preferred learning styles” — auditory, visual or kinesthetic — has little to no empirical backing. But although criticism may be denting the idea’s popularity, it still persists — which may say something larger about the way teachers today are trained."

Anyone that has worked a college help desk. quickly comes to understand that access and/or familiarity with digital tools does not equate to a high level competences with said tools.

Here is a collection of websites that realistically address the use of Twitter. They also address the idea of taking charge of directing the use of this powerful social media tool.

Guide to Using Twitter in your Teaching Practice ; this is a blog post from KQED with emphasis on online safety tips, netiquette, reasons and suggestions for using Twitter, and most importantly Twitter 101, resources to quickly make instructors feel comfortable, even competent in using Twitter.

Here is a 6 page downloadable PDF from Illinois Valley Community College that provides a quickstart guide to using Twitter.

A bunch of ideas for using Twitter are proposed here - some useful, some obvious, and some really intriguing.

Twitter may evolve into something totally different before long. Who knows? But the connections that are possible with social media (and the responsibilities) should resonate and strengthen your teaching for years to come.
RSS
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6688788144750011794.post-51971953778414447632015-11-09T10:30:00.000-06:002015-11-09T10:30:00.380-06:00Stress management for the online student6 stress management tips for the online student
Both these perspectives are reflected here in this blog post.
If you have created a video and it is hosted on a supported third-party media site (such as YouTube or Vimeo), you can easily add subtitles to the video. Check out this great Canvas Guide for more information: How do I create a caption file for an external video?

However, if you simply want to add some feedback to a discussion forum or a short announcement, you may not want to go to all the trouble of uploading it to your media site. Also, if accuracy is an issue, you can create your own closed caption video/audio file directly in CANVAS using the media tool in the Rich Content Editor. It's a bit of work, but easy enough to add subtitles for short clips that you don't want to upload to YouTube or Vimeo.

So when I found this bit of advice that actually made real-life sense, I felt I should share.
http://instructionaldesignindustry.com/how-to-design-analogies-for-elearning/
Much of it is familiar but reframing ideas in new contexts or hearing old songs sung with new voices (an analogy, get it?) can be refreshing.

RSS
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6688788144750011794.post-47511266715146573762015-09-16T08:00:00.000-05:002015-09-16T08:00:04.827-05:00Take the Windows Clipboard to an all new level! The copy and paste feature in Windows is a great tool. Especially when you are creating your SALSA Syllabus template in Canvas. It sure beats typing in all that information. However, as many of you at Butler Community College have come to realize, it's still labor intensive to navigate back and forth between your digital syllabus to copy text and then go back to your SALSA template to paste it.

Well, with ClipX, you can copy and retain 1,024 items instead of just one! Yes, you can actually copy the different sections of your syllabus and then when you have copied it all, you can navigate to your SALSA template and select each piece of information to paste in. There are other free downloads that can do the same, but I found this one was very easy to use, and I like easy!!

Take a look at the example below. I have copied several items and when I use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+V, the clipboard window appears with all my items I've pasted, with the most recent on top. Then, I just click on the item I want pasted in and that's it!
Check out a review from Softonic and access the free download. I've tested it and think it's the bombdiggety! However, if you use another multiple copy/paste tool, let us know about it!
RSS
Sheila Croningerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02678371001667670070noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6688788144750011794.post-44647545889282538802015-09-09T10:12:00.000-05:002015-09-09T10:12:32.677-05:00New features within Google Docs features research and voice typing!
New tools within Google Docs helps students research and type. Students can search Google within Docs. Users can also utilize voice recognization instead of typing. Hopefully you find these tools useful, as I will be showing them to my daughter as she uses Google Docs extensively for her school work.
I thought I would share some of the key insights:

Relevant context and
applicability is the best way to spur student engagement.

Instructor presence is
helpful (sometimes necessary), but a "light touch" rather than
heavy interaction actually helps encourage dialogue.

Clearly defined expectations
(typically either in the discussion prompt or the syllabus) about both
what's required of students and what to expect from the instructor is
helpful.

Discussions don't necessarily
have to be graded, but a clear understanding of their value and
contribution to the course (and to the grade if relevant) is
essential. Too meticulous of grading or rubric can discourage
anything more than minimal participation.

Rubrics and stated guidelines
for amount and quantity of participation can be helpful, but there's a
risk of superficiality (posting for the grade, rather than the natural
learning value) which can be detrimental to good discussion.

Having designated student
moderators can give them ownership and encourage quality discussion.

The best takeaway from SIDLIT 2015 (and there was some cool stuff) was this laid-back presentation by Jonathan Bacon. This slideshare can be downloaded and kept at hand for easy reference. Some of this I already knew but he had all of us oohing and aahing at some point.
My favorites include

Using camera from lock screen

Identifying owner of a lost phone

Taking hands-free selfies

(More) typing shortcuts

One that he did not include was the Medical ID. This article reviews how, why and why not to use this feature of your iPhone
RSS
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6688788144750011794.post-39248280317385364922015-08-26T08:00:00.000-05:002015-08-26T08:00:06.354-05:00Windows 10Windows 10 has been out for a few weeks. I have had a limited amount of time to enjoy Windows new Operating System. My initial testing has been very positive so far. I've recently freely upgraded my Windows 7 computers to Windows 10. This process took several hours but was worth it.

I have been testing the new Microsoft Edge browser. It seems slow compared to Google Chrome but I have not done many side by side comparisons yet. I'm still partial to Google Chrome browser.
